English Vocabulary Allusion or Illusion
English Vocabulary Allusion or Illusion Some commonly confused English vocabulary words that are often mistaken even by English speakers are allusion and illusion. The picture is not spinning, its an illusion.Do you know the difference between them? There was a famous pop song of the 1980s with one of these words in the title by a band called Imagination. What do you think it was called? Was it Just an Allusion or Just an Illusion?AllusionAn allusion is a figure of speech that means to make reference to something in a direct or indirect way.An allusion is mostly used when talking about literature. For example:The writer is making an allusion to the work of the great Russian writer, Tolstoy, in this reference. However, the prevalence of the word has spread and now it is also used to talk about film, art, photography and many other forms of visual art.In general conversation it is used to describe the act of making a passing reference to something. For example:The cake has the same smell as my motherâs pastries. Here, allusion is being made to my motherâs pastries. The verb form of allusion is regular with I am alluding to and he alludes to being the most commonly used versions.IllusionAn illusion occurs when the senses are deceived. It happens when the reality and what is perceived are different. For example:I had hoped John would come home for the holidays but that was an illusion. The classic example of an illusion is a mirage in the desert when someone is convinced he or she is seeing a lake of water when it does not exist in reality.ExerciseFill in the blanks with either allusion or illusion. How to Choose the Right Elective Courses in College
How to Choose the Right Elective Courses in College Choosing the Right Elective Courses in College In high school, students dont get to choose their classes for the most part. Although there are elective courses, many students choose based on what fits into their schedule or what they need to satisfy college admissions. However, once students arrive at university, they will be able to choose from a plethora of courses that satisfy their elective and general education requirements. This is the chance students have been waiting for; they get actually to choose what they are going to learn about. Thus, its important for students to choose elective classes theyâre interested in, and that will help them expand their personal knowledge of either their major or another topic of interest succeed in your college courses with the help of one of our experienced Orange County college tutors. 1. Think outside the box Students are encouraged to choose an elective course that takes them outside of their comfort zone. Perhaps the student has always wanted to learn how to make pottery or has always been fascinated by astronomy. They may be, say, a business major, but they have an opportunity in their first two years to think outside the box and learn something different. College is an opportunity for students to expand their personal knowledge base and also enjoy developing new skills and making new discoveries. Students who limit themselves to something that only fits into their schedule often find that they are not that engaged in their elective courses. 2. Counterbalance the stress of general ed courses Students are encouraged to think about how they can create a work-life balance when they choose elective courses. For example, if a student is taking two business admin courses and a science lab they may find theyre spending most of the week with their head in a book. It can be beneficial for students to have a creative or athletic outlet during a tough semester. For instance, students could choose their fourth class to be drawing and painting, weightlifting, or yoga. This is a major counterbalance to reading and writing intensive courses that keep stress high and deadlines tight. In fact, students who have a fun elective course often perform better in their general ed and major field of study classes (READ: 5 Reasons to Avoid Cramming For a Test). 3. Explore potential majors Many students dont know specifically what they want to major in their first or second year of college. Elective courses provide an excellent opportunity for students to discover what they might do as a potential career. Some students are pretty sure theyre going to major in a particular topic, but when they take their first course they find that they dont want to spend 30 years focused on that particular subject. Elective units provide students with a valuable opportunity to explore potential careers. 4. Try an internship Another great option is for students to complete a summer internship. This gives students an on-the-job experience to help them understand what their daily life will be like once they graduate from college. Because students are not paid for the majority of internships, its important they receive college credit and stay on track towards graduation as they complete their work training. 5. Improve social circumstances The majority of college level courses encourage students to work solo or with just one or two other people. However, a great many jobs require people to work as a team and problem-solve together. Thus, its important that students have some social education while in school. Many elective classes contain field trips, group projects, or community involvement as part of the overall curriculum. This is a great opportunity for students to learn how to work as a team and develop career skills. Additionally, students new to college can use their elective classes to study in a more social environment where they can develop long-lasting friendships that help improve the overall university experience. Dont fall behind in your college courses. Stay ahead and succeed with the help of our private Orange County college tutors. Healthy Options When Ordering Food Delivery
Healthy Options When Ordering Food Delivery Photo Via: Pixabay.com 1. Salad Itâs an age-old option for a reason â" salad is easily one of the healthiest options on most menus. That being said, donât fall victim to the salad trap. Many individuals assume that a salad is always healthy, but dressing can ensure thatâs not the case. Between fries and a vat of Caesar dressing, youâre likely eating more calories by choosing a salad drowning in dressing. So, in these cases, it typically makes more sense to order your dressing on the side to ensure your salad is actually a healthy choice. 2. Tofu Vegetarians typically have a small selection on each menu that they order off of, but even if you arenât a vegetarian, you should consider taking a look at these selections. Typically, vegetarian options, such as tofu, will actually save you a large number of calories and are just as filling. One of the biggest areas in which this is relevant is with Chinese food. Rather than ordering orange chicken, which is deep-fried and extremely unhealthy, tofu options can give you just as much flavor with far fewer calories to worry about. 3. Lean Meats In this same line of thinking, you should also consider eating lean meats rather than red meats with a lot of fat. While you may be craving a fattening, greasy cheeseburger, itâs certainly not the healthiest item on the menu, so choosing a chicken sandwich instead can help to save calories. You can also choose fish options, tofu or any other leaner meat than ground beef. Just make sure that when you choose lean meats, you are choosing grilled options, as crispier options are typically deep-fried and therefore unhealthy alternatives that youâll want to stay as far away from as possible! 4. Small Portions The smaller the portions, the more likely you are to have a healthy meal. That being said, this doesnât mean that a small side of fries will be as healthy as a small side salad, which seems like common sense, but in some instances, the appearance of food can be deceiving. This is why you should always take a look at the calorie counts on the menu. For this reason, make sure you consider smaller portions of fast food, and perhaps several of the healthier options, to ensure you are full but that you are also choosing healthier items in your food selection. 5. Different Sides Half the battle when ordering food is combating the awful, unhealthy sides that are available to you in fast food. Rather than adding fries, mozzarella sticks or onion rings to your order, opt for the healthier alternatives. For instance, rather than fries, add a side of apple slices to your order. Or rather than onion rings, get a small side salad. Remember that there are a million other options to choose from, not just in entrées, but also in sides, so there is always a healthier choice on the menu that you are able to choose. 6. Fewer Carbs Last, but certainly not least, you should always choose fewer carbs rather than more carbs, as these can account for a large amount of the calories you consume in fast food. For instance, ordering a burrito is a healthier choice if served over brown rice rather than on a flour tortilla. Some individuals choose to order hamburgers without the bun or to have a sandwich in a lettuce wrap rather than on two pieces of bread. Some individuals also hollow out the bread used to make their sandwiches in order to remove some of the calories there within. Food delivery is certainly a fantastic invention when youâre not in the mood to cook, but itâs a bit more difficult when considering your need for healthy food options. For this reason, the above six options are a great starting point to consider when looking for healthier options in food delivery. However, make sure you take a close look at the menu at each place you order from, getting a full overview of the menu rather than reverting back to your unhealthy favorites every time.
The Back-to-School Blues 4 Ways to Adjust to the First Day
The Back-to-School Blues 4 Ways to Adjust to the First Day The Back-to-School Blues: 4 Ways to Adjust to the First Day Kids are reluctantly getting ready to go back to school at the end of August. Some parents are sad to see their little ones go back to class while others are relieved to have a little bit more peace and quiet during the day. At this point, younger students have gotten used to playing outside, swimming lessons, soccer matches, or watching their favorite cartoons on their tablet. Going back to school from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm every day can be a pretty big adjustment especially for kids who didnt spend any time in summer school or an academic camp setting. So, how can kids (and their parents) beat the back-to-school blues and adjust to the first few days? 1. Start the adjustment early Kids who have gotten completely out of routine can start the adjustment before the first day of school to get used to sitting still for long periods on day one. Parents can initiate this change in many ways. For instance, parents can introduce a reading hour from 2 pm to 3 pm every afternoon or review math facts with their kids for 30 minutes after lunch. Working at a specific time of day or maintaining a specific routine helps kids transition to going back to school because it smoothes the otherwise extreme transition from relaxation time to learning (READ: Costa Mesa Tutor Tips: 4 Reasons to Multitask While Studying). 2. Reset bedtime Older kids may have gotten used to staying up later than normal during their summer vacation. It can be fun to have a break from routine, but it can also be difficult to take on the day without enough sleep. Its a great idea for kids to reset their bedtime schedule about 30 minutes each week so they get used to going to bed on time and can get up bright and early with lots of energy. If kids are struggling to fall asleep, it helps to take away electronic devices after dinner, which keeps kidsâ brains awake. These items can be replaced with a good old-fashioned paper book that kids can read in bed or their room. Kids with insomnia can also benefit from eating dinner earlier and avoiding after meal snacks, so theyre tired in time for bed (READ: Social Networking as a Freshman: 5 Doâs and Donâts). 3. Meet new friends If possible, kids can adjust to the transition back to school more easily if they can associate it with a positive social situation. If kids have a chance to hang out with some of their school friends in the neighborhood during the week or two leading up to school, they are more likely to feel comfortable in their classroom environment. If parents know what teacher their kid will have this year, they can ask other parents and see who has been assigned to the same class. Kids who are in a familiar social environment tend to be able to concentrate more because they are less worried about whether or not theyll have someone friendly to talk to during lunch and recess. 4. Extracurricular activities One reason kids dont like to go back to school in the fall is that theyre missing out on fun extracurricular activities that occur during summer. However, if kids have a chance to continue these activities throughout the academic year, they will be more likely to enjoy school all around. For example, if a student loved the arts and crafts portion of their summer camp they can sign up for an art class once a week after school. Or, if they loved playing baseball in the summer league they can sign up for the youth baseball team in the fall. Extracurricular activities help create a well-rounded education and keeps kidsâ spirits high throughout the year. The Essential Guide to Building Your Personal Brand
The Essential Guide to Building Your Personal Brand via Pixabay What Does Personal Branding Mean? Just how companies and business have a specific brand that people recognize when they see a logo or product, people have them too. A personal brand is what you put out for the public to see. Itâs a way for strangers to get to know who you are, what you stand for, and what kind of value you can provide. When someone sees your name, they should think of content youâve created or an industry you enjoy working in. Clean Up Your Social Media Before you even start thinking about building your personal brand, go through all of your old social media posts. Clean up your social media by deleting posts and pictures you wouldnât want important people to see. All of those pictures with red solo cups and climbing on things that werenât meant to be climbed should be taken down. Controversial or petty statuses should be deleted. The rule of thumb is that if you wouldnât want your grandmother to see it, then delete it. Itâs More Than Just Likes and Followers A common misconception about building your personal brand is that the number of likes and followers you have measures the success of your brand. While itâs a great feeling to get hundreds of likes and have thousands of people follow you, it doesnât always mean your personal brand is good. Building your personal brand means creating successfully getting your message out to the world and creating valuable content that shows off your talents and knowledge. Building your personal brand is more than just having a large following. Find Your Niche Now comes the hard question: What do you want to do with your life? Itâs a heavy question for someone who is just starting out. However, in order to build your personal brand, youâll have to figure out what type of industry youâd like to work in. Once you have that figured out, itâs time to pick your niche. Itâs essential to pick a niche that is specific enough to become an expert in, but broad enough so there are a lot of people who will need your expertise. An example of this would be someone would like to work in the marketing industry, but their niche is social media marketing. They have an overall knowledge of the industry, but hone in on one aspect and become an expert in it. Once you find your niche, itâs time to start building your personal brand. Graphic by Brittany Loeffler Pick Your Platform In the age of social media, there are a variety of platforms you can use when building your personal brand. However, each platform serves a different purpose and attracts different audiences. Itâs important to choose a primary platform that caters to your content, target audience, and your industry. Thatâs not saying that you shouldnât have more than one social media platform for your brand. It just means that you should focus solely on one platform while updating other platforms with the same content as your primary platform. Facebook You can use Facebook as your primary platform if you would like to easily interact with your followers. Itâs a great platform to post content that is shareable and is interesting to many people even outside your niche. Itâs also a useful platform if you are interested in Facebook paid advertisements down the road. LinkedIn For all things professional, LinkedIn is your go-to primary platform. Itâs a community of working professionals of all industries that share the same goal of networking and inspiring each other. If your niche is more business-content focused, then this is the way to go. Instagram Maybe your personal brand is more photo-focused. Instagram would be the best way to show off your talents and work. This is great for photographers and anyone in the food or fashion industry. The role of hashtags on this platform offers a great way to get your brand noticed. YouTube If you feel that videos are the best way to capture your personal brand, then your primary channel should be YouTube. You can get creative with your content when filming videos. It also doesnât limit you to 15-second or 1-minute clips. Medium When the best way to build your brand is through the written word, Medium is the way to go. This platform is helpful for reaching an audience with blogs and articles. Your writing will be categorized and shown to people who are interested in the same topic. Podcasts Though it isnât a social media platform, itâs a way to build your personal brand and share content with your audience. This is great if you enjoy talking rather than writing and can hold conversations. It also provides an excuse to conduct interviews. Pinterest Depending on your target audience, Pinterest may be the most effective platform. Women make up the majority of the siteâs users. It works best if your content includes appealing graphics that leads back to a blog post or article. Quora Show off your knowledge for your niche by answering questions people post on Quora. This will build a repertoire for your brand and people will trust your insights and knowledge the more you engage with people. Build Your Website Itâs essential to have a website when building your personal brand. Your website is home to all of your content, contact information, and everything your that is your personal brand. Having your own website is more professional than just having a Facebook page or LinkedIn profile. It doesnât have to be a fancy website with widgets and savvy graphics, so donât get too carried away. You can use simple programs such as Wix or SquareSpace to make your site. Make sure to create an email account using your websiteâs domain and add your website to your email signature. This will also enhance professionalism and draw more traffic. Design Your Personal Brand Building your personal brand means creating something that embodies you and your message. This can be done through the design of your brand. Choose a color scheme that represents your brand and industry to use on your website. Create a logo for yourself. If you arenât experienced in graphic design, you can find someone on Fiverr to create one for just $5. When you have a logo, people will associate your brand and message with it. Create Content Now itâs time to actually start building your personal brand. Creating content is how you build a brand and show people what you can do. Content can be in the form of many things. It can be blog posts, ebooks, videos, photos, or podcasts. Get creative with your content and topics. You want to draw people to engage with it and share it with their network. By creating content, you are communicating your niche and showing off your talents to potential employers while growing a following and successfully building your personal brand. Provide Value Have you ever clicked on an article because it had an interesting headline but found reading it was a waste of your time? Good content will provide value to its audience, which is exactly what you want yours to do. Your content should share your knowledge and ideas that some people may not know. Teach your followers something new or entertain them. In order to create quality content, your audience must get something out of it. Get Your Personal Brand Out There Itâs useless to have a personal brand and nobody to see it. You have to get your personal brand in front of people so they become interested and eventually follow you. This can be done a number of ways. Share your website or primary platform on social media. Ask your friends and family to share your content. Join relevant social groups on Facebook and share your brand with them. The more visibility the better! A personal brand is useless if it doesnât draw attention. You want people to see it and consider hiring you in the future because of it. Network Network with other people in your niche. Itâs as easy as sending someone you admire an email just to say hello. Start and grow relationships with other experts in your niche and grow your connections. These connections can someday land your dream job! The only way to network with these people is by building your personal brand. When you get your name out there and people recognize it, it will be easier to network. When people already enjoy your content and know what you stand for, they will be more interested in meeting with you. Collaborate with Other Brands The best way to get more brand awareness is by collaborating with other people and brands who already have a following. This could be in the form of guest posts on a blog or be interviewed during a podcast. The more you collaborate, the larger the audience your personal brand will reach. Collaborating with other brands is another form of networking. These connections can introduce your brand to their connections and so on. You never know who will see your content! via Pixabay Interact with Your Audience After you have built a foundation for your personal brand, itâs time to keep up with it and engage with your audience. They follow you because they are interested in what you have to say and what you can offer them. Show them that you value their interest in you with interactions. This can be in the form of answering emails they send you, replying to comments, or even hosting a QA. One of the most powerful things social media has to offer is interacting with people. Start a live stream video and invite your followers to watch and ask you questions about yourself or your niche. Theyâll appreciate you acknowledging them. Embrace Your Brand The number one thing to remember is to be yourself when building your personal brand. You want your personal brand to be authentic and stay true to who you are as a person. People can spot someone being fake on social media a mile away. Since you are building your personal brand to one day land a job in the future, you donât want to lie about things. You should be truthful in what you say and genuine in your ideas. You donât want someone to hire you for something you arenât. You also donât want someone expecting more out of you than you can actually accomplish. Land Your Dream Job By building your personal brand, it puts you one step closer to landing your dream job. It shows potential employers that you are an expert in your niche and can add value to their company. Building a personal brand also shows that you are dedicated and creative. Not everyone takes the time to build a personal brand and keep up with it. Building your personal brand says a lot about who you are and itâs more than just what you put online. When you work hard and stay dedicated to your niche and making connections, it will one day reward you with your dream job.
Solubility Curve Definition - Understand The Chemistry Behind Solubility And How It Can Be Calculated
Solubility Curve Definition - Understand The Chemistry Behind Solubility And How It Can Be CalculatedSolubility curve definition, as the name suggests, is a formula that describes the in-depth analysis of solubility of a chemical substance in water. As most scientists will tell you, solubility is a measurement of the relationship between molecular weight and the volume in which it can be dissolved in. All chemical substances are solids, with one or more polar molecules that contain electrons. So what are the variables that affect solubility? Well, many things affect solubility. First, there is the pH of the liquid that it will be dissolved in. Once the water has reached the right pH, it is sufficiently acidic to effectively eliminate all of the potential chemical reactions that may occur within it. In the end, this could help keep any harmful compounds from damaging the overall structure of the water. To make matters even more complicated, water contains chemicals, liquids, particles, viscosity, physical properties, and color as well. This means that not only are there different degrees of acidity or alkalinity that affect the overall chemical balance, but also that when they are added, different proportions will cause different levels of impact. It would not surprise anyone to find out that some substances can easily dissolve in a water solution, while others have greater impact on solubility, especially if it is being used as a component in a synthetic chemical. The degree of solubility that would be expected would be the one found in both natural and pure water. As an example, water is generally considered to be very easy to dissolve.Solubility curve definition, as the name implies, is an equation that can be used to calculate the solubility of a chemical substance in water. It includes all the variables that can affect this measure, as well as the pH of the liquid it will be dissolved in. This equation also includes the amount of pressure the chemical needs to withstand when it is diluted in water. This measure is simply the amount of a substance needed to dissolve into a given volume of water, depending on its physical and chemical properties. For instance, the salt is very easy to dissolve into water, since it is mainly composed of molecules that are positively charged, and a dissolved amount of one of these elements would certainly decrease the concentration of any other molecule that is present. As the name implies, solubility curve definition, as the name implies, is a mathematical equation that allows us to determine the rate at which a chemical substance becomes soluble in water. We have this equation for practically every substance that we can think of that is utilized as a component in a laboratory or industrial setting.

Distillation Organic Chemistry in Todays World
Distillation Organic Chemistry in Today's WorldDistillation is a method used by organic chemists to separate liquids and solids by the passage of heated vapors through a filter. The process is based on the principle that the mass of the liquid stays the same while the amount of the solid remains different.Distillation works well for many purposes including drug development, pharmaceutical testing, and extracting water from liquids. It has proved its worth in these areas because it has enabled the chemicals to be separated in their purest form. This would have been impossible without the addition of the distillation process. Here are a few of the ways it can help organic chemists.Phytochemicals. The production of these chemicals takes place in small amounts in nature and only happens occasionally. However, with distillation they can be extracted at a much higher rate.Oil Extraction. With the growing use of fossil fuels, the production of some compounds has been severely affected. In t his case, distillation provides an alternative method for extraction that is less environmentally harmful.Carbon Dioxide (CO2). In the normal cycle of nature, the CO2 created by photosynthesis is recycled back into the atmosphere. When this happens, the CO2 in the air becomes a pollutant and is converted into other gases such as CO2.Ocean Water. When oil is extracted from underground sources, the deposits are usually heavily mineralized. However, with distillation, the water which is produced in this way can be removed from the deposits and used to fertilize various types of plants. When used correctly, distillation can provide a solution to a complex chemical problem. The different methods it is applied to range from those in the pharmaceutical industry to those used for industrial processing.
